Fingernail Tattoos for Dolphins Fans? š Vintage 1997 Miami Dolphins NFL Sealed Pack, Play-By-Play San Antonio
Size: 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
It's Football Season!!! Did you ever wear your team's colors right down to your fingertips? That's exactly what these were made for - ten little Dolphins logos lined up and waiting to be pressed onto your nails before kickoff. š¬
š What's In the Pack
This is a sealed, New Old Stock pack of Miami Dolphins NFL Fingernail Tattoos, distributed by Play-By-Play Toys & Novelties of San Antonio, Texas, and made in Taiwan ā the copyright line "Ā© 1997 NFL Properties, Inc. All rights reserved" is printed right on both the header and the tattoo sheet itself. NFL Properties was the league's own licensing arm, set up in 1963 to keep control of the league's and the teams' marks and to license them out to the companies making official NFL merchandise, so that little line is the league's permission slip for every dolphin on the sheet. The front sets the old star-spangled NFL shield over a painted stadium scene, lists the pitch in plain black type ā Easy to apply, Easy to remove, Waterproof, Lasts for days, Safe & non-toxic ā and stamps FINGERNAIL TATTOOS across the turf in bold yellow. It's a busy little stadium scene when you look close: yellow goal posts and pennant flags under a blue sky, red bleacher stripes, green turf with yard lines, a red banner across the top corner, and the shield itself in red, white and blue with its stars and football. The yellow letters are outlined in black, and that five-line pitch is the confident, no-nonsense kind of copywriting novelty companies leaned on before anyone had heard of a focus group - the exact promises a parent in 1997 wanted to hear before turning a kid loose with tattoos on game day. Beside the shield it also prints the usual "Not recommended for children under..." warning, with the age tucked under the tattoo sheet. The card is 2 1/2 inches square, about 6.4 cm on a side.
Underneath sits a tan sheet of ten Dolphins logos arranged in a ring, and if you look closely they're printed mirror-reversed ā the dolphin faces the wrong way and the tiny TM reads backwards. That's not a printing mistake, it's how a water-slide transfer works: it goes down tattoo-side first, so the backwards image on the sheet reads correctly once it's pressed on and the paper backing peels away. Flip it over and the back walks you through four application steps in little red-line drawings ā peel off the protective sheet, press it down tattoo-side-down, wet the back with a sponge or cloth, wait 20-30 seconds, then peel off the backing, rinse and let it dry. Below the drawings it says the same steps work on skin, and when you're done you just wipe the tattoo off with alcohol "or any leading brand cold cream." I love that cold cream line. Here's the fun part: the sample tattoo in those drawings is a Pittsburgh Steelers logo, not a Dolphins one. Play-By-Play clearly drew up one generic instruction back and ran it across every team in the line. At the bottom it reads "DISTRIBUTED BY Play-By-Play TOYS & NOVELTIES, SAN ANTONIO, TX 78218-0267" ā the company's actual address on file was 4400 Tejasco Street. Collectors say Play-By-Play only made this pack for about a dozen NFL teams, which makes chasing a full team run half the fun.
Look at how the ten are laid out: eight fingernail-size dolphins in two rows of four, plus two bigger ones, one on each side between the rows - one for every nail on both hands. Each is the leaping dolphin in deep teal-green, wearing a helmet marked M, inside the orange sunburst ring, the same mark the team put on its helmets that year.
š¬ 1997: The Year the Dolphins Got a New Look
The logo on this sheet wasn't an old standby ā it was brand new for 1997, the Dolphins' first major logo redesign. The leaping dolphin got a heavier navy-blue outline and more defined features, and the sunburst behind it switched from thin lines to the bolder, pointed burst you see on the sheet, a look the team kept on its helmets all the way through the 2012 season. It went with a bigger uniform overhaul that year too ā darker aqua, a navy drop-shadow on the numbers.
On the field, 1997 was head coach Jimmy Johnson's second season in Miami, with Wayne Huizenga owning the club and Dan Marino still at quarterback out of Pro Player Stadium. The Dolphins went 9-7 and finished second in the AFC East, losing the division to New England 14-12 on Monday Night Football and then losing the Wild Card rematch at New England a week later, 17-3 ā the Patriots beat them three times that season. Defensive tackle Tim Bowens made the Pro Bowl, and despite the rough finish, 1997 kicked off a run of five straight playoff appearances for Miami. This pack caught the Dolphins right as they debuted the look their fans wore for the next decade and a half.
šŖ Play-By-Play Toys & Novelties, San Antonio
The company behind these tattoos started small. Arturo Torres left Cuba for America in 1961 hoping to become a cowboy. Instead he found a job washing dishes at a Pizza Hut in Texas, and he worked his way up until he was running 240 Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants. In 1986, while he still had the restaurants, he started Play-By-Play as a vending-machine prize supplier, and within six years he had sold the restaurant business for $125 million. In 1990 he brought in Jay Foreman to co-found Play-By-Play Toys & Novelties with him in San Antonio and push it past the prize business into retail, and Foreman ran it as general manager until 1996. In 1992 Foreman landed the company's first big licenses: stuffed toys carrying the Coca-Cola and Harley-Davidson names. Walmart picked them up and became Play-By-Play's first traditional retail customer, the step that took the company from amusement parks and carnivals onto mass-market store shelves. From that start in San Antonio it grew fast ā buying its largest competitor, Ace Novelty of Bellevue, Washington, in 1996 gave it real reach into carnivals and amusement parks. By July 1997, the year printed on this pack, Play-By-Play had about 620 people on the payroll, 600 on the toy side and 20 in vending, and sales for the year had jumped to $137.4 million from $74.2 million the year before. By 1998 it held about half of the whole carnival prize market, supplying places like Six Flags, Busch Gardens, Sea World, and Dave & Buster's, alongside licensed toys sold at Walmart, Kmart, Target, and Toys "R" Us. Sports licenses like this NFL tattoo pack joined the roster as the company kept adding trademarks through the late '90s, all run out of that Tejasco Street warehouse.
The company's own history puts it plainly: his drive and determination took Torres "from the kitchen to the board room" - a Cuban refugee who ended up running a national toy and novelty company. The Ace Novelty deal was the big one: Play-By-Play agreed to buy the Bellevue, Washington company in May 1996 for about $44 million and closed that June, financing it, plus working capital, with a $65 million credit facility - Chemical Bank as agent, with Heller Financial and Texas Commerce Bank in on the loan. Its own 10-K called it the leading supplier of stuffed toys and novelty items to the American amusement industry; the company histories go further and call it the largest supplier of stuffed toys and novelties in the United States. In 1998 its UK arm signed with Walt Disney UK to distribute Disney plush in Britain and Ireland, a contract valued at $5 million in its first year.
The character licenses read like a wall of 1990s childhood. The company's history lists Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Sylvester, the Tasmanian Devil, the Animaniacs, Spider-Man, Batman and Wolverine, licensed from Disney, Warner Bros. and Marvel; its 1998 annual report adds Daffy Duck, Speedy Gonzales, Yosemite Sam and Superman, and Disney's Mulan, The Little Mermaid and 101 Dalmatians. And tucked right in among them was the National Football League. To put the Dolphins' leaping dolphin and aqua-and-orange colors on a tattoo card, Play-By-Play paid the league for the right the same way it paid Disney and Warner Bros. for its cartoon lines - even the cheapest little thing on the novelty rack was part of the league's licensing machine.
Jay Foreman kept going in toys after he left Play-By-Play in 1996: he co-founded Play Along Toys in 1999, and in 2009 he founded The Bridge Direct, renamed Basic Fun! in 2017.
It didn't last forever ā Play-By-Play hit financial trouble by 2001, Torres stepped down as chairman that June, and the company was delisted from Nasdaq. Its European arm survived, though ā it moved its headquarters to Spain in 2002, the toy group Famosa bought it in 2006, and it still makes plush toys out of Valencia today, a long way from a San Antonio warehouse full of licensed novelties and a sheet of Dolphins tattoos.
Some of its people carried the trade on at home. In April 1999 a group of Play-By-Play's own managers, led by its former president Mark Gawlik and Sid Karmia, started a competing San Antonio novelty company, Toy Factory. And the European arm, bought by the Spanish toy group Famosa in 2006 together with Feber, has been part of Famosa-Giochi Preziosi since 2019.
š From Me
Tattoos are fingernail size.š Is your team going to win it all??? I love football so much that I might be wearing some of these! My daughter will love it. If you are confident in your team I want to see you take advantage of the Super Bowl Package if not I know what that means!𤪠I won't even mention who my team is.š
My pictures seriously don't do it justice.
The vintage stickers are a reminder of a bygone era in the NFL. Original NFL licensed vintage items are extremely collectible or also really neat to wear as it is the dominant sport in the USA and the interest won't go away anytime soon!š
I was able to save these from Florida and grabbed them as I didn't want them lost. I hope you guys agree and love them too! They seem to have only made 12 different teams back then for this promotional item. I am so pumped for football season Just listing this is getting my adrenaline running. My team is one of these tattoos I might have them on my forehead etc during games and hopefully, we see your team in the Superbowl
Go Dolphins!!

- šØ Stand it upright on a bookshelf beside other 1990s licensed novelty packaging as a small pop of team color.
- š¬ Give it a spot in a Dolphins fan's collection case next to the jerseys and helmets.
- šļø Slip it into a binder or display sleeve with other sealed 1990s sports novelty cards for a themed ephemera collection.
š Who Collects These
Items like this were never built to last. Fingernail tattoos were printed cheap, sold cheap and used up within days - pressed onto a nail before a game, worn off in the wash a week later, the empty card tossed out. A sealed one is a little artifact of a whole disposable-goods business. They find their way to Miami Dolphins superfans building out a run of team memorabilia, vintage NFL ephemera collectors chasing officially licensed pieces from the pre-internet, pre-jersey-website days of fandom, and toy and novelty historians tracking the Play-By-Play catalog of the 1990s. Plenty of buyers are just longtime Dolphins fans drawn back to something they remember from childhood, and more than a few pick one up as a gift for the football fan who thinks they've seen every kind of team memorabilia already.
