Remember Coca-Cola Classic Football Keychains? 🥤 Coca-Cola Classic Football Keychain, Sealed in Its Package

Size: 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" ~ Unopened.

An unopened 1990s Coca-Cola football keychain, still sealed in its package. These are all in original dealer packaging. The photos walk you through what opening one looks like. The colors are so bright, and they're made of good, tough rubber! Nobody has opened this package since the day it was made - that'll be you. Coke and football on one keychain, from the years Coca-Cola was a partner of the NFL. It doesn't get much more collectible than that!

The fob is shaped like an upside-down pennant in soft molded rubber. The top is red with the white Coca-Cola script logo and ®, and CLASSIC between two white rules. Down in the black point sits a white football helmet with its face mask, and a little TM at the tip. The back is plain black, and it hangs from a small jump ring on a steel split key ring. It comes sealed in a clear bag, folded up in white tissue paper printed MADE IN CHINA.

🏈 Coke and the NFL

Coca-Cola became a partner of the National Football League in 1983, two years before the word Classic ever went on a can, and stayed through the 1990s. That run ended in the spring of 2002, when Pepsi took the spot away. PepsiCo agreed to spend more than $160 million on five-year deals to become the league's official soft drink, starting April 1, 2002. So 1990s Coca-Cola Classic football keychains like these come out of Coke's NFL years.

🧊 Why It Says "Classic"

That one word on the keychain is a famous piece of business history. On April 23, 1985, the Coca-Cola Company changed its formula and launched what everybody called New Coke, and the country revolted. The company hotline, 1-800-GET-COKE, went from about 400 calls a day to over 1,500. On July 11, 1985, just 79 days later, Coca-Cola held a press conference and announced the original formula was coming back. Peter Jennings of ABC News interrupted General Hospital with a special bulletin, Senator David Pryor called it "a meaningful moment in U.S. history" on the floor of the Senate, and the hotline got 31,600 calls in two days.

The original came back under the name Coca-Cola Classic, and the new one stayed on as "Coke" until it was renamed Coke II in 1990. Bottles and cans kept the word Classic until January 2009, when the company started dropping it. So that little word CLASSIC on this keychain is a leftover from the great New Coke fight.

It's a fun little gift for a Coca-Cola collector, a football fan, or anybody who remembers the day they brought back the real thing. The supply is finite. Once these last sealed 1990s Coke football keychains are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.
